SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Every year, the Sullivan County Historical Society presents deserving individuals with the honor of “History Maker” and “History Preserver” awards.

This year, the History Preserver Award goes to Jackie Horner. She gained fame as a consultant and an inspiration for the 1987 Catskill resort-inspired film “Dirty Dancing.” For more than half a century, she continued her career as a dancer and a dance instructor in Sullivan County.

In the past, the recipient of the Sullivan County Historical Society’s History Maker award has had a long, notable and accomplished career. Corporal D. Russell Sprague, who died in the trenches in France in 1917, never had that opportunity. He was 19 years old, and the first Sullivan County boy to lose his life in WWI. A native of Parksville, his patriotism, youthful vigor and spirit of adventure exemplified all who served during this conflict. His life and sacrifice will be honored as the Sullivan County Historical Society’s History Maker for 2018.

The two will be honored at a presentation dinner at Bernie’s Holiday Restaurant on Sunday, October 21. For more information call 845/434-8044 or visit www.scnyhistory.org.
