HONESDALE, PA — Graffiti was found in the Dyberry Cemetery last Monday, June 1. The Honesdale Fire Department was called in around 4:30 p.m. to clean it up.

The vandal or vandals spray painted several messages on the cemetery’s mausoleum, including: “Eat the rich,” “I can’t breathe,” “ACAB,” and “The earth is on fire.”

The phrase “I can’t breathe” is most commonly used as a slogan for anti-police brutality, especially against black individuals. One of the organizers of an anti-police brutality protest in Honesdale—scheduled for Thursday, June 4—condemned the vandalism on the Facebook event page.

“We are here to demonstrate our solidarity and fight for justice, peace and equality. This defacement is not what we want to be showing our town,” she wrote. “This is was the wrong way to express your wrath. Instead of defacing your town, join your community and come stand with us and show that we can seek change in our local area through peaceful methods.”

Before learning that the fire department had already cleaned up the graffiti, community members taking part in the Thursday protest were planning on cleaning up the graffiti themselves.

The Honesdale Police Department could not be reached for a request for comment on the incident.
