George Harvey Snyder passed peacefully on Thursday, March 2, 2017, surrounded by loved ones. Born August 8, 1921 to A.L. Snyder and Kathryn Lepulica Snyder, George married Jessica Smoley (of Smoley’s Logarithm Tables) in 1942. After Jessica’s death in 1988, he married Jitka Langer Klimchok in 1991 (d. 2015.) He adored both of his wives and always made them feel cherished.

George served in the Army Air Corps during WWII in the China-India-Burma campaign; operated Snyder’s General Store and Service Station in Equinunk, PA; was an Esso Oil distributor in Northern Wayne County; ran a prominent fish hatchery; was a Pennsylvania deputy environmental conservation officer for over 30 years; and held the top award for tree farms in the state of Pennsylvania in his retirement. As a very active member of the community, “Harvey” was a charter member of the Equinunk Volunteer Fire Company; was active in the Equinunk Cemetery Association; was a former Trustee of the Equinunk United Methodist Church; and was involved with the Masons, Kiwanis, and American Legion. George, also known as “Red,” loved hunting, fishing, snowmobiling (took prizes for racing in the 1960s and sold sleds in the sport’s infancy.) He often talked about his hunting trips with Matthew Freda and always had interesting stories about his time on the Burma Road and life in his beloved Wayne County.

George is pre-deceased by his brother C. Lynn Snyder (d. 2004), his sister Edna Bartram (d. 1956) and his brother Charles Snyder (d. 1927).

He is survived by his sister-in-law Margaret Snyder; his nephew John H. Snyder and wife Kathy, his niece Linda S. Koons and husband Craig; two grand-nieces (Nora-Lee and Laura), a grand-nephew (Lynn Michael); and two great-grand-nieces. George is also survived by step-son and caregiver, Joseph Klimchok and his fiancée Shirley Woodfield. George will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.

Calling hours will be held on Thursday, March 9, 2017 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Henderson-Biedekapp Funeral Chapel, Hancock, NY. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, March 10, 2017 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Hancock. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Cemetery, Galilee, PA.
