LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — Talk about salvaging a win from the slavering jaws of defeat in a classic tale of a come from behind victory.

On Saturday, March 7, the fans in the stands got to watch a real barn burner of a men’s battle of hoops during the semi-final game of the NJCAA Division II East District A & B match-up featuring the Generals of SUNY Sullivan and the Kats from Erie Community College.

Setting the stage for the divisional championship game on Sunday, the Wolverines of Essex Community College defeated the Colts of SUNY Orange, while in the second game, Sullivan edged the Kats 78-72 in a game that could have easily gone in either direction.

The final outcome of Saturday’s back-and-forth war on the hardwood and off the glass was up in the air until the second half; the lead changed hands four times and the score was tied on three occasions.

In the first frame, the Kats scalded the Generals 36-27 as SUNY Sullivan got off to a lackluster start. It seemed as if someone had nailed a lid on their basket while shots repeatedly missed their mark.

In the second and deciding frame, Sullivan got their horses lined up and headed in the right direction; they raced to the finish line outscoring Erie 51-27.

The tide of the game really started to swing toward the Generals at 7:45 in the second half, as they were up 60-55. From that point in time, it was pretty much all she wrote for the Kats.

The game played out in front of the best crowd of the championship tourney. The home team was aided by the ramped-up tunes played by Judge Mike McQuire, SUNY Sullivan’s veteran DJ and announcer, spinning his traditional “Who Are You?” along with “Hit Me With Your Best Shot.”

Meanwhile, up in the bleachers, Sullivan’s Boyz and Gurls of the Bunker whopped it up in support of the Generals.

The informal home team cheerleading squad was absent on Sunday, as more than 100 SUNY Sullivan student-athletes were off campus, participating in athletic events out of the area.

Generals’ top scorers: Darius Lee (10 points, 8 rebounds), Khari Dawson (10).

Kats’ top scorers: Ladji Fofana (30 points, 12 rebounds), Ahamadou Fofana (22), Terrell Brown (11).

Stats from the free-throw line: Sullivan 15/22 (68 percent), Erie 22/25 (88 percent)
