LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — In the wake of Sullivan West’s 70-51 loss to Chester Academy, Bulldogs coach John Meyer said in essence it was a pretty good bet that you have a lot of work to do if your team posts 27 turnovers against a team that was undefeated going into the contest, and so far has “too many inconsistences” while it gels into a cohesive unit moving in the same direction.

The boys’ varsity non-league basketball home game was played on Friday, December 20.

“We’re not seeing the floor, taking what they give us. When we get something going, we need to keep working on it, we seem to drift away from that. Everybody has to do their job, we have to be fundamentally sound. We have to be confident in one another. When the opportunity arrives, we have to take the bull by the horns,” said Meyer.

He said of his 11 hoopsters, “We consider ourselves a family, when someone is down, we try to pick them up… Everybody has a part to play, nobody is more important than the next guy.”

The Bulldogs (2-5) take to the floor led by a trio of captains: Cody Powell, Gabe Campanelli and Nick Dworetsky. There are three seniors on the roster: Campanelli, Dworetsky and Matt Peters.

Goals for the season?

“First and foremost, try to get into sectionals… Get better each day,” replied Meyer.

Jon Marsilio is at the helm of the Chester Hambletonians (4-0), who are captained by Kevin Stein, a third-year captain, Anthony Feliz and Gianni Johnson.

His goals for the season?

“Getting better each week, getting better each game… Hopefully get into the playoffs, get a nice little run,” said Marsilio.

Midway through the first frame, Chester went on a rambunctious rout, at one point leading the home team 14-0, while in the second half, Sullivan West staged a few brief surges as they caught fire and played with spirit.

On the way to the checkered flag, the Hambetonians outpaced the Bulldogs in the opening frame 22-4, while in the second period, Sullivan West edged their opponents 20-17.

In the third inning, Chester was back on track 22-15, and in the final frame the Bulldogs out-scored the visitors 12-9.

Sullivan West’s leading posters: Game Campanelli (24 points, 8-for-10 at the free throw line), Ryan mace (9) and Chris Campanelli (6).

Chester’s top guns: Kevin Stein (27), Anthony Feliz (16) and Jacob Delgado (13), while from beyond the 3-point arc, Stein racked up an impressive total of six 3-pointers, and Gianni Johnson added a 3-pointer.
