CALLICOON, NY — A blaze broke out at the Callicoon Caffe restaurant and Benzina River Mart and gas station at 23 Dorrer Dr. in Callicoon at about 8 p.m. on February 3. The fire is believed to have been sparked by faulty wiring in a light fixture.

Numerous fire companies responded quickly to the scene, and firefighters cut into the roof in order to fight the blaze. A post on the Facebook page of the Friends of Esther Fellowship Ladies said the restaurant, where the group held its ladies’ night out, was fully engulfed in flames, and they announced a new meeting place.

The fire did not spread to the gasoline pumps and tanks located just feet away from the burning building. The fire was brought under control at about 9:30 p.m. The fire companies involved in fighting the blaze included those from the Upper Delaware, Callicoon, Hortonville, Lake Huntington, Equinunk and Jeffersonville.

The restaurant was a popular breakfast spot, and a Facebook post about the fire drew more than 50 comments of support from members of the community. The following morning, some residents said they hoped the building owners will rebuild and were thankful the fire didn’t spread to the gas pumps.
