REGION — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for Central New York and Sullivan County from noon July 19, through 8 pm July 20.
Maximum heat index values will reach 95 to 105 degrees Fahrenheit Friday afternoon, and 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit Saturday afternoon. The high heat index values are caused by high temperatures in lower to mid 90s and dewpoints in the lower to mid 70s. The heat index will be highest in the lower elevations and urban areas.
Dangerous levels of heat and humidity may cause heat illnesses during outdoor exertion or extended exposure.
NWS warns that residents should drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room if possible, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing.

"The Sullivan County Government Center in Monticello is open as a cooling center during normal business hours. We are also recommending people looking for relief from the heat seek out their local libraries, municipal buildings and public pools/lakes/rivers.
"While this is a longer-term solution, our HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) also offers financial assistance to eligible people with chronic conditions that require a reliably cool room. More info is available via our Department of Family Services at (845) 807-0142."
