Emily Oelkers, 71, of Barryville, NY, a longtime resident of the area, passed on Saturday, February 11, 2017 at Milford Healthcare and Rehab Center, Milford, PA.

The daughter of the late Gustav and Ruth E. Olsen Oelkers, she was born December 19, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY. The family moved to Rockville Center when she was three years old. Emily graduated from South Side High School. After she graduated she worked as a key punch operator for a firm on Long Island. When she went to the World’s Fair in 1964 she was introduced to the Mormon Church. A few years later she went to work in Salt Lake City. After two years, Ruth and Gus asked her to come home to open what became Oelkers General Store in Barryville.

Working was not just a job for Emily—it was a way of life. The store became the center of life in the community, and Emily was the heart of it. Emily would not turn away anyone in distress. Any organization or program that needed support knew that they could count on Emily’s help. She would drop anything to assist those in need. Her positive and cheerful outlook on life inspired all those who met her. Along with her good heart, she had a wonderful sense of humor.

Emily was devoted to her work with the Monticello Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints. She actively served her “calling” in working with teenagers, young adults, teaching classes for women and the Relief Society.

She was also active in the Sons of Norway, and because of her Norwegian heritage greatly enjoyed all of their activities. Another interest of hers was the Republican Club, where she served in many capacities. In addition to her many other community activities, she was a Girl Scout leader for many years, much beloved by everyone who came to know her.

Survivors include her two sisters, Norma Notzold of Philadelphia, PA and Verna Jones of Scranton, PA. She is also survived by five nieces and nephews, seven great-nieces and nephews and eight cousins.

A memorial service is being planned for April 2, 2017, additional details to be provided at a later date.
