ELLENVILLE, NY — Joshua Stuart, 42, has been arrested after a manhunt by New York City Police and New York State Police. Stuart was accused of committing an armed robbery in a Brooklyn neighborhood on October 1, and was apprehended later that day.

Before fleeing to Brooklyn, Stuart allegedly fired a gun in the emergency room in Ellenville Hospital on September 28. According to a statement from the hospital, the incident involved a patient being treated there, but no one was injured in that shooting.

Stuart fled the hospital in a white pickup truck, and at one point he stopped the truck and was confronted by a group of New York City Department of Environmental Conservation police officers. Stuart fired several shots at them before fleeing into the woods on foot. Again, no one was injured.

Officials considered him armed and dangerous, and a manhunt was started in the area around Ellenville. The New York State Department of Conservation closed the Vernooy Kill State Forest.

The Ellenville School District was closed for the day on September 28 because of the manhunt and shooting.

The Vernooy Kill State Forest was reopened after Stuart was caught on security camera video in Brooklyn on October 1.

Several archived news articles say that, in another incident, Stuart was arrested in 2016 and accused of robbing a pharmacy on Route 209 in Kerhonkson, but he was ultimately acquitted of that crime.
