ELDRED, NY — It was “slicker than snake snot” out there, as a brief torrential rain glazed the soccer field with water.

But reptiles aside, the home team Lady Yellow Jackets of Eldred (2-0) shook off the unexpected slick field conditions to defeat the visiting Lady Indians of Liberty 5-1 in a non-league soccer game on Friday afternoon, September 8.

The score stood at 3-1 at the close of the opening frame, as Eldred’s Paige Weyant scored on an assist by Lenae Kelty, followed up by a score by Hailee Kolvenbach off an assist by Kelty, and Hunter Finck, also on an assist by Kelty.

Liberty’s solo goal of the match was by Olivia Rachette, a deflection off a free kick, to make it a 3-1 game at the close of the first half.

It was all Eldred in the second frame: a goal by Kelty and a free kick by Kylie Robertson.

It was quite the outing for Kelty, as she posted a goal and a trio of assists.

Keeper saves: Eldred’s Sami Clemmons 13, and Liberty’s Gabby Magie 7.

Anne Ramos has been coaching Lady Indians booters (0-1) going on eight seasons. Her take on their first game of the new soccer season?

“We didn’t show our strength… we are a better team than we showed today… with this under our belt, we know what we need to do,” she replied.

Liberty is fielding a team led by three captains: Gabriela Nolan, Olivia Racette and Jerikah Fleishmann.

Nolan, a 17-year-old senior, stepped up to the plate to offer her assessment of the fledgling season.

“We have a lot that we can work on… I think we can do amazing things; we have great promise,” she said.

So what do they need to focus on?

“Communication, passing and a lot more awareness of the field,” said Nolan, who has been playing Liberty soccer since seventh grade.

Sonia Kidney in her inaugural season as head coach of Eldred’s girls’ varsity soccer squad, having previously coached JV and boys’ varsity soccer.

“The first half was a little rough; we were playing sloppy,” she said, adding “The downpour caught us off guard.”

“We just need to come together… we’re learning to gel as a team right now.”

Eldred has a quartet of captains: Julia Foster, Kassandra Weatherly, Alania Gaughan and Sami Clemmons, and two of them (Weatherly and Gaughan) also suit up for the varsity football team.

As their comrades left the field of play to gear up for the evening’s gridiron game against the Blue Devils of Roscoe, Foster and Clemmons offered their take of the season.

“We’re still starting out, so obviously we have to improve,” said Clemmons, a 17-year-old senior goalie.

Foster, also a 17-year-old 12th grader, said the 2017 Lady Yellow Jackets booters are made up of something old and something new.

“We have our old defense and a new offense… we’re learning to come together,” she said.

“We’re hoping for the best and go to the top.” For more photos, visit www.riverreporter.com.
