‘Ecology of Aquatic Plants’

LAKE ARIEL, PA — Ever wonder about the aquatic plants in your lake? Wonder if they may be invasive species? Join the Lacawac Sanctuary on Sunday, July 18 at 2 p.m. for a hands-on workshop on aquatic plants given by Dr. Elizabeth Carroll, an expert in aquatic plant ecology and identification from Holy Family University.

Participants will learn about what makes aquatic plants unique, their role in lake ecosystems and how to identify common native and invasive species. Participants will also learn how to survey aquatic plants in their own lakes by helping to conduct a lake-wide survey of the aquatic plants in Lake Lacawac and Heron Pond (from shore or using boats provided by Lacawac).

This outdoor event will be at Lacawac Sanctuary. Masking and social distancing required.

Outdoor Explorers day camp

GREENTOWN, PA — From Wednesday, July 21 to Friday July 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 noon, Outdoor Explorers will take place at Promised Land State Park, located on Route 390.

Outdoor Explorers is a DiscoverE camp designed to teach the older and more active child—aged 7, 8 or 9—about their place in the natural world. Dissect an owl pellet for predator/prey studies, count bats in the maternity box for PA Game Commission’s bat study, do a mini-bioblitz to discover what lives in the park, and learn about fish and go fishing.

This program costs $35 per child with $17.50 for any additional children in the family.

Ten Mile River Scout Museum reopens

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Ten Mile River Scout Museum, located on the grounds of Ten Mile River Scout Camps’ headquarters at 1481 County Road 26, is open for the summer season as of July 13. All visits should be scheduled by calling 845/252-2063.

The museum will be open the following hours: Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If people wish to visit outside the set hours, contact the museum to schedule an appointment. Information about schedule changes and events will be posted on the museum’s website, www.tmrmuseum.org.

The newest exhibit, “The Geology of the Ten Mile River Scout Camps,” is representative of the entire Upper Delaware River Valley. It includes a video, “Upper Delaware River Resource Mapping,” from a presentation that New York State Museum and geological survey scientist James Leone delivered to the Upper Delaware Council, summarizing the findings of a contractual project with the National Park Service to take samples and map the geological features of the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River valley on the New York side.
