Douglas C. Stephenson, 80, of Hawley, died on Monday, December 30, 2024 at Wayne Woodlands Manor. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, the former Jean M. Hiller. The couple married on August 24, 1963.
Born on February 3, 1944 in Monticello, NY, he was the son of the late Walter and Gertrude (Lorde) Stephenson. For many years, Doug and his wife owned and operated D.S. Knitting Mill in White Mills. He and his wife later moved to Long Island where Doug trained to become an HVAC technician and worked for Environmental. Following his retirement, he and Jean settled back in the White Mills area.
For over 60 years, he was a member of the White Mills Fire Department. He was also a member of the White Mills United Methodist Church.
Doug was a handyman who could fix anything and was always willing to help others. He had a great sense of humor. A model R.C. plane enthusiast, he enjoyed playing hozzie with friends and, in his younger years, stock car racing. Doug especially liked going fishing with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Deborah Bigart and husband Ron of Hawley, Colleen Rettinger and husband Jeff of Milford and Darlene Bilella and companion Erik of Manorville, NY; 12 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Bruce Stephenson.
The family would like to extend a big thanks to the staff of Wayne Woodlands Manor. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the White Mills Fire Company.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 11 at Hessling Murray Funeral Home, 428 Main St. Honesdale at noon. The family will receive friends at 11 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be in the spring in Indian Orchard Cemetery.
