Don’t forget to recertify your handgun permit

MONTICELLO, NY — Sullivan County Clerk Russell Reeves reminds handgun owners that they may need to re-up their permits soon.

“The New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act of 2013, commonly known as the NY SAFE Act, requires the holders of handgun permits to be recertified every five years,” he explains. “If your permit was issued on or after January 15, 2013, the deadline to recertify is five years after the date the permit was issued. If your permit was issued before January 15, 2013, the deadline to submit your recertification was January 31, 2018 and then every five years thereafter.”

Recertification can be done online—at no cost—at https://firearms.troopers.ny.gov, or by mail. The form is available for download and printing at https://on.ny.gov/3GwPybB. The form is also available at the county clerk’s office in the government center, 100 North St. in Monticello.

Public health department announces changes in COVID-19 dashboard

LIBERTY, NY — The continually evolving response to COVID-19 is bringing about changes to the Sullivan County COVID-19 dashboard displayed for public use. The following changes went into effect on February 1: the dashboard will no longer report the number of active cases, since not all positive at-home test results are reported; dashboard updates will be provided on Tuesdays and Fridays, which will include the rolling data from three to four days prior; the dashboard will not include a combined isolation/quarantine number, as contacts are no longer being collected in all situations (contact tracing continues for vulnerable congregate settings); the dashboard will continue to show the number of total cases since the beginning of the pandemic (March 2020), the number of Sullivan County resident deaths due directly from COVID-19 complications since the beginning of the pandemic, as well as a breakdown of hospitalized cases at Garnet Catskills Medical Center, including out-of-county residents; the dashboard will include links to the NYS Department of Health’s vaccine tracker; and the dashboard will no longer give a township breakdown of cases on a map, as this does not reflect current positivity rates.

Gov. Hochul provides statement on full stay of mask-regulation ruling

ALBANY, NY — On Monday, January 31, Gov. Kathy Hochul provided the following statement on a decision by the Appellate Division, Second Department granting a motion by the attorney general’s office to keep the statewide mask mandate in effect during her office’s appeal.

“I commend the Appellate Division, Second Department for granting a full stay to keep our masking regulations in place for the duration of our appeal. My primary responsibility as governor is to keep New Yorkers safe. Mask regulations keep our schools and businesses safe and open, protect vulnerable New Yorkers, and are critical tools as we work to get through this winter surge. Thanks to our efforts, including mask regulations, cases are declining and we are seeing major progress in the fight against COVID-19. I thank the attorney general and her team for their defense of these common-sense measures, and I am confident we will continue to prevail. We are committed to doing everything in our power to keep New Yorkers safe.”

Complete the health survey, get a gift card

LIBERTY, NY — Sullivan County residents may have recently received—or shortly will receive—a health survey from the NYU School of Medicine to complete.

This is phase two of a multi-year project, and many recipients may recall getting a survey in 2021. Sullivan County Public Health Services and the NYU School of Medicine partnered last year to perform a health survey, sponsored by the National Institutes of Health, to better understand the health and dietary patterns of residents in Sullivan County and the prevalence of diabetes. The project is titled “The Impact of the Food Environment and Other Environmental Exposures on the Risk of Diabetes in Rural Settings.”

Surveys were recently mailed to approximately 4,000 individuals who participated in phase one of the study and returned their surveys. In the first round, participants were randomly selected households throughout Sullivan County.

The survey takes approximately five to 10 minutes to complete, and those who reply will receive a $50 Visa gift card by mail. It is completely voluntary, and responses will be kept confidential. No information will be collected or used to identify anyone who participates in the survey, although respondents must be Sullivan County residents to be eligible. Questions regarding the surveys or the project can be directed to the county Public Health Services department at 845/292-5910.

Delaware Water Gap national park suggestion endorsed

WARREN COUNTY, PA — The Warren County Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution endorsing Congress’ redesignation of the Delaware Water Gap national recreation area as a national park, according to published reports. The resolution indicated that “upgrading the Delaware Water Gap would create greater awareness and prestige for our region. This could also mean more funding for maintenance, visitor amenities and other improvements.” For more information on the Delaware Water Gap, visit https://riverreporter.com/stories/filling-the-gap,49611.

Correction

The January 27 gas disruption that stopped the gas from flowing from the interstate distribution line to the system that feeds local distribution to Milford was caused by mechanical failure at the UGI Milford station. The cause of the disruption was inaccurately described in the February 3 brief on page 2. Visit https://bit.ly/RR-gas-disruption for the full story.
