‘Library-by-Mail’ service begins

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Sullivan County public libraries will be offering a new service to patrons unable to visit their library. Library-by-Mail is a free delivery service for borrowing library materials, available to residents of Sullivan County who are temporarily or permanently unable to access their library building due to illness, immobility, disability, or transportation issues.

The Sullivan Public Library Alliance (SUPLA) secured support for this program through an Outreach Services Grant from the Ramapo Catskill Library System, funding from Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther, plus programming funds from Sen. Jen Metzger.

Contact your local library in Sullivan County for additional information or to find out how to sign up for this new service.

‘A Dialogue on Beauty’

NARROWSBURG, NY — Pat Carullo, a digital artist, will facilitate “A Dialogue on Beauty.”

“For me, beauty is in Bach’s music,” he says. “But as quantum theory demonstrates, observation affects reality.” So is beauty really in the eye or the ear of the beholder? Does it not exist on its own, being rather created by those experiencing it? Is it just an idea that is collectively agreed upon, or varying due to individual tastes and cultural backgrounds?

Carullo has designed an interactive group exercise to help you determine what and how you think about beauty.

All are invited to the one-hour service, sponsored by the Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, to be held in Room 102 of the Narrowsburg Union. Directions and more information can be found at www.uduuf.org.

Pearl Harbor remembered

HONESDALE, PA — More than two dozen veterans, all three Wayne County commissioners and Wayne Memorial Hospital staff, many of them veterans, gathered in the hospital’s new pedestrian concourse on December 6 to remember one of the darkest days in U.S. history, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

The surprise attack by the Japanese on December 7, 1941 claimed more than 2,000 lives and marked the official entry of the U.S. into World War II. The ceremony, led by VFW Post 531 Commander Phil Sheehan, American Legion Post 254’s James Bruck and Wayne Memorial Health Foundation Executive Director Jack Dennis, included readings about the day of the attack and the playing of taps by bugler Doug Wyllie. In addition, the group said a somber prayer and laid a wreath at the hospital’s memorial plaque dedicated to soldiers.
