Possible COVID-19 exposure at Livingston Manor Dollar General

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Sullivan County Public Health Services is alerting anyone who visited the Dollar General store on 100 Main Street in Livingston Manor, NY on the following dates and times that they may have been exposed to an individual who tested positive for COVID-19 and was contagious: October 5  between 1 and 10 p.m.; October 6, 7, 9, 11, or 12 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.; October 10 between 1 and 10 p.m.; and October 13 between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“Although we believe that compliance with mask-wearing was routinely enforced, out of an abundance of caution, we are notifying the public that customers visiting on these dates and times could have been exposed,” said Sullivan County Public Health Director Nancy McGraw. “If someone thinks they have been exposed, they should self-quarantine for 14 days and call their health care provider if symptoms develop, or call Sullivan County Public Health Services at 845/292-5910.”

Sullivan wins national award again

MONTICELLO, NY — For the fifth consecutive time, the Sullivan County Manager’s Office and Budget Office have earned the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).

“This award is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and represents a significant achievement by your organization,” GFOA Technical Services Center Director Michele Mark Levine wrote in congratulations to Sullivan County Manager Josh Potosek.

A panel of judges reviewed more than 1,600 budgets submitted to the GFOA, including Sullivan County’s version for the 2020 fiscal year. They judged the budgets on their excellence as policy documents, financial plans, operations guides and communications devices, deeming Sullivan’s to be “proficient” in all four categories.

Rachel’s Challenge versus COVID’s challenges

HONESDALE, PA — On Thursday, October 22, Wayne County is overcoming the challenges of COVID-19 to celebrate “Go Orange Day” and stay committed to Rachel’s Challenge by “speaking with kindness,” “looking for the best in others” and “dreaming big.”

The community first embraced Rachel’s Challenge in 2012. On “Go Orange Day,” people are encouraged to wear orange to promote awareness and to reach out in kindness to someone that day.

“It will not only make them feel better, but it can brighten your day, too,” says founding Rachel’s Challenge Committee member Margaret Ennis.

To mark the occasion, the Wallenpaupack Area School District and Wayne Memorial Hospital have put up orange ribbons in Hawley and Honesdale, respectively, and the Forest City School District will be including Rachel’s Challenge in their annual “Go and Be Great Day.”

Wolf vetoes restaurants bill

HARRISBURG, PA — Gov. Tom Wolf has vetoed a bill that would have allowed restaurants to operate at full capacity if they met necessary social distancing guidelines. Wolf’s current restrictions only allow for 50 percent capacity in restaurants and bars.

“This bill jeopardizes public health and safety,” Wolf said about the legislation. “This bill increases the likelihood of COVID-19 outbreaks.” GOP leadership is considering an override vote.

Cuomo: ski resorts can reopen at 50 percent

ALBANY, NY — On October 18, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that ski resorts can reopen with 50 percent indoor capacity and with strict health and safety protocols under state-issued guidance starting Friday, November 6.

“Scientists have told us the virus is going to become more aggressive in the fall, and right now, we are all feeling COVID-fatigue, but our micro-cluster strategy is a smart, data-driven and less disruptive strategy to get us through this season. And so far, the data shows the micro-cluster strategy is working to bring infection rates down in our red zone areas,” Cuomo said. “[Skiing] will allow New Yorkers to have some outdoor activity this winter without having to quarantine when they come back.”

Galligan announces guilty plea

LIBERTY, NY — Sullivan County’s Acting District Attorney Meagan Galligan announced that Peter Parks, 62, of Liberty, recently pleaded guilty before the Sullivan County Court to grand larceny in the third degree, for stealing more than $17,000 from the Village of Liberty in his former role as working supervisor of the village’s department of public works.

Parks admitted that, between 2014 and 2019, he approved Village of Liberty payroll documents which he knew falsely indicated that two DPW employees had been working for the village at times that they were actually working for Parks’ own private construction business. Under Parks’ supervision, the men completed private construction projects for Peter Parks Construction, but Parks submitted documents to the Village stating the men were working those hours for the Village DPW, defrauding the village out of $17,718.18. Acting Judge Stephan Schick has agreed to sentence Parks to five years of felony probation supervision, with the special condition that he see that the rest of the monies due to the village are paid or face re-sentencing, which could include prison time.
