SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — As a way of marking the 50th Anniversary of the Woodstock Music and Art Festival in 2019, Sullivan County has arranged for the creation of 36 fiberglass doves to be stationed in locations throughout the county in the New Year. The doves are each about five-feet high and seven-feet long and have yet to be painted.

“Each dove will be painted by local artists showcasing the character and history of each community,” according to Roberta Byron-Lockwood, president and CEO of the Sullivan County Visitors Association (SCVA). “The trail will entice visitors and local residents to explore the Sullivan Catskills and learn the stories that makes us a distinctive designation to visit and live... It will be also be an economic engine that will stimulate tourism spending in our local towns, villages and hamlets.”

Sullivan Renaissance has announced a special grant program with grants to be used for bringing color to the doves and to pay expenses related to landscaping and artist fees.

Executive director of Sullivan Renaissance Denise Frangipane said the project will be instrumental in bringing the community together.

“We appreciate that this project will not only connect our towns and villages through a public art trail, it will unite Sullivan County communities while commemorating an important time in our history,” Frangipane said.

SCVA has developed guidelines for the painting of the doves, emphasizing colors and themes of the 1960s. A dove trail planning committee will begin reviewing proposals in January. For more information, contact the SCVA at 845/747-4449 or email rbl@scva.net.
