WSPL virtual book discussion group

ONLINE — Join the virtual book discussion via Zoom offered by Western Sullivan Public Library (WSPL) Thursday, June 11 at 4 p.m. This month’s discussion will be about Kim Michele Richardson’s historical fiction novel, “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek.”

Call for virtual performance

ONLINE — The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop and Director Harold Tighe announced auditions for a virtual performance of local Playwright Peter Nastase’s play “Locked Away.”

The cast consists of four men. All actors must be able to play late-60s to late-80s in age. Auditions will be through a video call. All rehearsals and performances will be through Zoom or something similar. Performance dates are anticipated to be late June or early July and will be determined shortly. Those interested in auditioning should email the director at
haroldtighe50@gmail.com no later than Saturday, June 6; a video call will be arranged between 5 and 9 p.m. Rehearsals will be scheduled when the full cast is determined and at the convenience of the cast.

Catholic Charities’ Celebration of Charity Fundraiser goes virtual

ONLINE — In light of the ongoing COVID-19 social distancing guidelines, Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan and Ulster decided to transition its 14th annual Celebration of Charity and Caritas Awards Dinner to a virtual event to launch on Tuesday, June 9 at 7 p.m.

The Celebration of Charity is Catholic Charities’ largest event of the year and raises much-needed funds to support the non-profit agency’s programs in the community, including emergency food and shelter assistance and substance use treatment and prevention. The funds raised stay local to support the marginalized and vulnerable in Orange, Sullivan and Ulster Counties. Catholic Charities provides assistance to those in need regardless of religion or ability to pay.

The 2020 Caritas honorees who will be celebrated on June 9 are the Bruderhof, Ellenville Regional Hospital, Drake Loeb PLLC, Attorneys at Law and Mr. Thomas Kelly.

Container gardening seminar

ONLINE —  Sullivan Renaissance is partnering with the Community Learning Program at SUNY Sullivan to offer a free online demonstration about container gardening for businesses and public spaces. A pre-recorded session with Sullivan Renaissance Horticulture Program Manager Diana K. Weiner will premiere on Wednesday, June 10 at 3 p.m. A live Q&A will immediately follow via Zoom.

The session will detail combinations of annuals, perennials, tropical plants, herbs and vegetables for creating vibrant eye-catching planters. Gain insight on caring for planters, download container garden recipe cards and learn about multi-season plantings.
