‘City of Ghosts’

NARROWSBURG, NY — On Saturday, October 17 and Sunday, October 18 at 5:30 p.m., the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) will present a staged reading of “City of Ghosts,” an existential mystery play conceived and directed by Manon Manavit and co-written by Turner Roth. Inspired by Paul Auster’s novellas in The New York Trilogy, the play is an homage to New York City and the detective mystery genre.

Staged outdoors in DVAA’s backlot, where COVID-related safety protocols will be followed, and in the style of a pop-up speakeasy, DVAA’s building exterior will serve as apartments, Central Park and a seedy hotel where private eyes watch their subjects from the windows. The production will feature James T. Majewski and Rishi Mukherjee, NYC-based actors and California Institute of the Arts alums; G. Oliver King, known locally for his portrayals of Frederick Douglass and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Elizabeth Senja Spackman, recipient of a 2020 MAP Fund Theater Artist grant; Cecilia Parker, a student of Acting at New York University; and Pamela Scott Arnold, musician with local band “Beat the Devil.’” Jim Strong, experimental musician and curator of Philadelphia’s Vox Populi, will perform a live improvised score on his original instruments. Wardrobe styling by Madame Fortuna and photography and graphic design by Jorge Colombo and Danielle Case.

Concessions provided by 2 Queens Coffee will be available by donation. Audiences are required to wear masks and encouraged to dress warmly. Admission costs $25 and $20 for DVAA Members.

Lake to Lake 8K

LAKE ARIEL, PA — Lacawac Sanctuary will host its seventh annual Lake to Lake 8K Trail Run, Woods Walk and Dog Wag on Sunday, October 18 on the trails of Lacawac.

The Lake to Lake event kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Run and walk through the trails of Lacawac Sanctuary: more than 400 acres of wonder, biodiversity and natural beauty. Be advised that sections of the course are technical, rocky and steep. No dogs or strollers on 8K or 5K course, but both are welcome on Woods Walk. The Trail Run costs $30 and the Woods Walk costs $20.

Participants in the 8K Trail Run will be awarded overall male and female and top finisher in age groups 15 and younger, 15 to 19, 20 to 29, 30 to 39, 40 to 49, 50 to 59, 60 to 69 and 70 and over. The Woods Walk is non-competitive.

‘Art About Town: Autumn Spectacular!’

PORT JERVIS, NY — Join the River Valley Artists Guild’s celebration of the longest days of Autumn with its show, “Autumn Spectacular.”

Included in the exhibit are photographs, paintings, color pencil drawings and pastels by artists that celebrate the visual beauty of Autumn found in Orange County, NY. Curator of Art About Town, Susan Miiller, says: “I hope the viewer will enjoy the appeal of color, styles and local talent represented in our Autumn Spectacular!” The exhibit is spread out about town at the following venues: Gio’s Gelato Café, city hall, Bon Secours Cafeteria, Port Jervis Library and Deerpark Town Hall.

Bethany Public Library opens raffle fundraiser

BETHANY, PA — The Bethany Public Library has launched a fundraising raffle with two cash prizes worth $750 to be given away in time for the holidays. First prize is $500 cash, second prize is $250 cash and third prize is a signed and dated handmade quilt in a “postage-stamp” pattern created by Nancy Swingle and quilted by Julie Mott of Pike County Quilt Company. Tickets cost $5 and are on sale at the library Wednesdays through Saturdays, 12 noon through 5 p.m., or from any board of trustees’ member or friends of the library. The drawing will be held Saturday, December 12.

The ghost stories of Sullivan County

ONLINE — On Thursday, October 22 at 6 p.m., Sullivan County historian John Conway will present “Ghost Stories from Sullivan County History.”

Over the years, there have been a number of great ghost stories set in Sullivan County including Washington Irving’s “Hans Swartz: A Marvelous Tale of Mamakating Hollow” and Stephen Crane’s “The Black Dog.” However, not all Sullivan County ghost stories are fictional.

From the ethereal spirits believed to still roam the site of a bloody Revolutionary War battle to the restless specter of the victim of an 1892 hex murder said to haunt the stone arch bridge where he was killed, local lore is filled with tales that tantalize, and John Conway will discuss some of the most popular in this new program.

‘People and Places’ photography exhibit open

NARROWSBURG, NY — A new exhibit, ”People and Places: Photography As Observation,” opened at the Narrowsburg Union on October 10. Curated by Krystal Grow, the exhibit is centered around photographic representations of people and places at a time of immense change, disruption and uncertainty. Featuring the work of local and visiting artists Norlan Olivo, Carlos De La Rosa, Ricardo Castro, Laurie A. Guzda, Nicholas Mehedin and Glenn Lieberman, the exhibition is an exploration of photography in the wake of a global pandemic and an international reckoning on race, class, power and oppression, and an opportunity to share stories, perspectives and ideas at this unprecedented moment in history.

Drive-in, live music at the Narrowsburg Union

NARROWSBURG, NY — On Saturday, October 17, the Narrowsburg Union will host a drive-in music event in its parking lot. The cost is $20 per car with a maximum of four people; each additional person in the car will cost $5. Tickets will not be sold at the door. The gates open at 5:30 p.m.; the show is from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The line-up of regional artists include Caswyn Moon, Kathy Geary, Fisher & Kean, Scott Palermo and Poison Love Band.
