Christene S. Myers passed away peacefully on July 13, 2017 at Catskill Regional Medical Center.

She was born in Eldred, October 22, 1920, the only child of Emily C. (Parker) and Howard Stevens.

Christene was predeceased in 2011 by Martin D. Myers, after 69 years of marriage, and by their infant daughter Jean Ellen Myers. She is survived by her two children: daughter Patricia and Dennis Toaspern, son Steven Myers and Constance Poole. Also surviving are grandsons Adam Toaspern and Sioux Stanton, Jeffrey Toaspern and Erika Allende; great-grandson Kain Toaspern and great-granddaughter Miah Dawson; grandsons Thomas Myers and Kayla Allen and Timothy and Mikayla Myers.

A lifelong resident of Eldred, Christene (Teenie) worked in Eldred for the U. S. Postal Service for 43 years, 26 of those years as postmaster, providing exemplary and compassionate customer service to area residents. She was active in the National League of Postmasters, the NYS Branch, and the Sullivan County Association of Postmasters, holding offices throughout the years. After her first “retirement,” she worked for the Sullivan County Board of Elections for many years as well as being Town of Highland Deputy Town Clerk, retiring from that appointment at age 93. She collected many, many friends during her life’s journey and kept them all close.

Christene was a charter member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 1363, one of the first women to join the Town of Highland Lions Club as well as the first woman president and a member of the Town of Highland Democratic Committee. There are numerous plaques and accolades on the walls commemorating her extra efforts.

While she was one of the kindest and most polite people, she was woven from a strong, rugged fabric like so many of her generation. Most of all, she was an unwavering supporter of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. With her passing, there are now significant voids in the hamlet of Eldred and the hearts of her family.

If you wish to make a memorial contribution, please consider the American Legion Ambulance, PO Box 63; the Sunshine Hall Free Library, 14 Proctor Road; or Can’t Hurt Steel, PO Box 333, all in Eldred, NY 12732.

Services were held at Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home in Barryville, NY on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at 11 a.m. Christene was buried next to Martin in Montoza Cemetery in Eldred. Rev. Nancy Vonderhorst officiated.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Harrison Rasmussen Funeral Home Barryville, NY. 845/557-8010
