KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY — A long-standing fantasy of this sports scribbler is to pick up a banged-up Lincoln Continental Mark V, a multi-ton heap of Detroit retro-iron, paint it matte black and add a few skull and crossbones decals.

Maybe chop a few more holes in the already ratty mufflers and option it out with a dual set of radios, blasting death metal on one channel—on the other, tune in a bit of hillbilly.

And go looking for the clown that cut me off on the thruway the other day, hoping he’s got the windows down and dreads the tunes.

Well, you get the idea, and yes, imaginary dreams of revenge can indeed be sweet, but not on the road.

But back to reality. If your idea of a fun afternoon is crashing cars into each other and trips your trigger, a demolition derby might just be a ticket to heaven: hillbilly or otherwise, but definitely not up there in the clouds with Ludwig—Beethoven that is.

On Sunday, September 20, Bethel Motor Speedway showcased a demo derby presented by Spinning Wheels Productions. More than 1,000 spectators watched the drivers smash each other’s rides into junk, gleefully ramming them until only one remained running, its driver the only one standing.

In a future edition of the River Reporter, we’ll take a look at the twisted steel with a pictorial tribute to the local volunteer firefighters who served to keep everyone safe.
