GOSHEN, NY — In recognition of September as National Recovery Month, Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster invites community members to attend a Mass for Recovery at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 71 Murray Ave. on Monday, September 24 at 7 p.m. It is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

September as Recovery Month is a national observance sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) to raise awareness of mental health and/or substance-use disorders, celebrate individuals in long-term recovery, and acknowledge the work of prevention, treatment and recovery support services.

“For many dealing with mental-health and substance-use disorders, the fight is a private one because of the fear of stigma and prejudice,” said Dr. Dean Scher, CEO, Catholic Charities of Orange, Sullivan, and Ulster. “But, there’s no need to go it alone, services and support are available in our communities for individuals and families. Prevention works, treatment is effective and people do recover. I encourage those in need to seek support,” added Dr. Scher.

In 2016, an estimated 44.7 million adults, aged 18 or older (18.3%) had  some form of mental illness, including substance-use disorder in the past year, according to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, an annual survey released by SAMHSA.

“St. John’s is happy to host this mass,at which we’ll pray in a particular way for and with those struggling with addiction, working to sustain recovery, coping with loss, and their families and loved ones.  The invitation is open to everyone, both Catholics and those of other faiths,” said Fr. George Hafemann, St. John’s parish priest.
