ELDRED, NY — Trail clearing, providing assistance to a local woman fighting cancer and a fundraising 5K are all on the spring agenda for Can’t Hurt Steel Community Foundation, a local organization whose mission is to provide assistance to community members in their times of need.

A cadre of volunteers was not deterred by the coldest temperatures of the season as they met on February 15 to clear brush in the Hickok Brook State Multiple Use Area off Barker Road in Eldred. A joint effort of Can’t Hurt Steel, the Town of Highland and the State of New York, the goal is to create a walking and fitness trail. Significant progress was made and additional workdays will be planned.

On Saturday, February 22, all are invited to Pasta With a Purpose, to benefit Lenore Nizzico of Glen Spey who is fighting cancer for the second time. The pasta dinner will be served from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Highland Town Hall and can be eaten on site or carried out. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children under 5. Raffle tickets will be sold at the door. Donations can be made payable to Lenore Nizzico. Can’t Hurt Steel is sponsoring the event. Runners and walkers can lace up their athletic shoes both to benefit their health and support Can’t Hurt Steel at its fourth annual 5K race in June. The exact date is still to be determined. Last year the event drew approximately 200 participants and is expected to be bigger this year. Runners will gather at the Beaver Brook Rod and Gun Club in Narrowsburg.

The funds raised at the 5K will be used by Can’t Hurt Steel Community Foundation to meet community needs. The foundation provides grants to assist patients and family members who are experiencing a catastrophic illness. The grants work to help alleviate some of the financial and emotional stress associated with a life-threatening illness. Another mission of the foundation is to enhance the quality of life of those living in the community, including providing seed money and grants for community wellness programs.
