Bulldogs take the sting out of Yellow Jackets

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — Maybe it was fate, or perhaps it was destiny.

But whatever the case, the home team Bulldogs of Sullivan West boys' basketball team posted a win in their final home stand of the season by defeating the Eldred Yellow Jackets 44-34.

Both teams had a rather lackluster season, and neither squad will advance to the playoffs.

With the victory over the Yellow Jackets on Wednesday, February 21, the Bulldogs are currently 9-11 overall and 0-4 league, while Eldred is 4-12 overall and 3-5 league.

Sometimes the scorebook doesn’t tell the real story, as at the home of the Bulldogs, the Dawg Pound is always at full cry and the cheerleaders keep the players and fans charged up by their on-court energetic routines.

In the wake of the senior recognition night rite of passage for the home team varsity cheerleaders and boys' varsity basketball squad, it was game time.

After a slow start, the Bulldogs rallied to take a 10-8 lead at the close of the first frame, and outscored their opponents 13-9 in the second period to take a narrow three-point lead at the half.

The Yellow Jackets fought back in the third frame, outscoring Sullivan West 10-9, but in the final frame ran out of juice as the Bulldogs stung them 12-7 to post a 10- point win.

FTL figures: SW 6/7 (86%), ECS 2/4 (50%).

Big guns for Sullivan West: Brandon “Booboo” Dailey (12 points including three from outside the arch), Alex Unser (12 including a ‘three’), and Reis Geiger (8). Posting ‘three’s’: Brandan Cardona and Collin Hauschild.

Eldred: Jake Elvin (9 points including a ‘3’), and with a total of six points each Christian Schadt, Patrick Kinney and Joseph Santoro. Jordan Reed posted a ‘three’.

“We’re a young team with only two seniors (Jake Elvin and Joseph Santoro) to help us out”, said Yellow Jackets coach Dave Binkowski.

“It’s a season in which we had to learn a lot in a little bit of time…we’re going to work in the off season, and come back more competitive.”

Coach John Meyer, the big hound of the Bulldogs, said that while it wasn’t perhaps the best of years record-wise, “The season didn’t end up where we wanted it to, but we fought to the end.”

Of the senior recognition night 2018 victory.

“We got the win”, said Meyer.
