MONTICELLO, NY — A Bronx man who led police on a high-speed chase was sentenced to nine years in state prison on October 12 for possession of heroin with the intent to sell it. Jason Burmudez, 37, pleaded guilty to the charge of possession in June.
District Attorney Jim Farrell said Bermudez Bermudez was arrested on August 3, 2017 by members of the Monticello Police Department after a vehicle and traffic stop on Landfield Avenue. After stopping his vehicle and speaking with officers, Bermudez fled the stop, taking off at a high rate of speed, taking Monticello Police on a pursuit through the village. The chase ended when Bermudez crashed his vehicle into another vehicle in the Citgo gas station on State Route 42. Police searched Bermudez and discovered about 44 grams of cocaine and 18 grams of heroin.
Farrell praised the work of the Monticello Police, who removed a significant amount of narcotics from our community. “The sentence handed down in this case underscores my office’s commitment, and indeed the commitment all of law enforcement in Sullivan County, to investigate, arrest and prosecute those people who are distributing deadly narcotics in our community. In addition, Bermudez’s behavior in fleeing the police created a real danger to others and for all of this criminal conduct he will spend the better part of the next decade in a state prison.”
