Bog walk

For an otherworldly experience within a manageable drive of the Upper Delaware region, a visit to the Tannersville Cranberry Bog in Monroe County, PA is in order. Designated a National Natural Landmark because it is the southernmost low-altitude boreal bog on the eastern seaboard, this bog resembles those found at much higher elevations such as New York’s Adirondack Mountains.

Many unusual plant species, like the ones depicted here, inhabit the bog. Some of North America’s most beautiful native orchids, such as rose pogonia and the state-endangered heart-leaved twayblade, enjoy refuge there.

The bog is one of the first preserves protected by the Nature Conservancy, which limits public visitation due to its fragile nature. Guided tours led by Monroe County Conservation District educators are offered enabling people to explore the heart of the bog via a 1650-foot floating boardwalk.
