BOCES students win state competition

SYRACUSE, NY — For the sixth year, students from Sullivan BOCES’ New Vision Health program came out on top in a statewide competition.

In the annual New York State SkillsUSA competition, Health Knowledge Bowl contestants Owen Bassett, Renee Robinson, Kaitlyn Lapomarede and team captain Jacob Kaplan took first place. They qualified to travel to Atlanta, GA in June for the national event.

In the past seven years, the New Vision Health program placed second once and took the gold six times, said instructor Catherine Freda.

In addition, Collen Barbato competed in the Health Professional Portfolio category and brought home a bronze medal.

First-year student Jenna Hendricks studied medical language to prepare for the Medical Terminology event. She faced students with far more experience, and, even so, placed fifth.

Raine Kelly had to prepare a speech; she reflected on the importance of unity in her classes, in healthcare and in the nation. She placed sixth.

“We are so proud of our students who attended the statewide competition this year,” said Jeffery Molusky, executive principal of the Career and Technical Education Center. “Our students work very hard… To be able to compete in a [tough event] is proof that our students know their stuff.”
