Sullivan County District Attorney Jim Farrell announced on October 25 that the Supreme Court, Appellate Division, Third Department, in Albany, N.Y. has upheld the conviction and sentence of Vincent Ryan, of Bloomingburg, N.Y.   Ryan was convicted of Attempted Murder and related charges.

Farrell said that the evidence at trial established that on May 28, 2015 Ryan attempted to kill his own mother by intentionally driving his 2005 Chevy Tahoe into her home in Bloomingburg, NY., while she was inside.  Ryan observed his mother in the doorway, aimed the rear of his vehicle in her direction, placed his vehicle in four wheel drive and “floored” the accelerator towards his mother and the home.  The SUV broke through the exterior wall into the downstairs basement living room pinning her underneath the SUV.  As a result, Ryan’s mother suffered serious physical injury, including lacerations to her head, a fractured sternum, and a compound fracture of her leg which caused a bone to protrude through her skin.  She was airlifted to Westchester Medical Center for life saving treatment.  When interviewed by State Police investigators Ryan admitted to wanting to kill his mother.

In a unanimous decision, authored by Justice John C. Egan Jr., the appellate court rejected all of Ryan’s arguments on appeal and affirmed all of Ryan’s convictions and the the 25 year state prison sentence imposed by the Sullivan County Court.

Farrell said, “I am pleased that the appellate court unanimously affirmed Ryan’s convictions, as found by a Sullivan County Court jury, and the 25 year prison sentence imposed in this case.  The defendant received a fair trial as affirmed by the appellate court.  His actions were cold, callous and intentional.  Ryan attempted to kill his own mother and the 25 year prison sentence was appropriate given his violent actions.”   Farrell thanked Chief Assistant District Attorney Megan Galligan who made the sentencing argument in the case, Assistant District Attorney Kristin Hackett who prepared the appellate brief and the New York State Police, the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, the State Police Forensic Identification Unit and the State Police Forensic Investigation Center for their complete and thorough investigation of the case
