Bird lovers on your list?

The holidays are here, and so are some great gifts for those who love birds. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology, a unit of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY has some exciting offerings. Purchases help to fund the lab’s mission to improve understanding and protection of birds.

New this year is the university-level, self-paced “Ornithology: Comprehensive Bird Biology Course,” about bird diversity, behavior, ecology, evolution, physiology and conservation. The course is based on the new third edition of the “Handbook of Bird Biology” and includes online materials such as videos, interactive animations, quizzes and additional reading. The handbook includes more than 800 full-color illustrations.

Buy a Cornell Lab Membership and receive a subscription to their award-winning Living Bird magazine, along with discounts on projects and courses. And check out their wooden gift boxes made of sustainable pine and cedar from Maine and including shade-grown Smithsonian Bird Friendly Certified Coffee and Vermont-based preserves. See more at www.birds.cornell.edu/page.aspx?pid=1836 .

Another excellent gift for all who love the exquisite sounds of nature—especially birds—is offered by Lang Elliott, a “nature sound recordist,” cinematographer, author and speaker, also based in Ithaca. Elliott offers a selection of truly exceptional nature “soundscape” recordings available as MP3 downloads and compact discs. (musicofnature.com). While you’re at it, give yourself a gift by signing up for Lang’s beautiful blog, featuring video clips, nature recordings, poetry and prose.

Finally, you can adopt a favorite bird for your beloved birder through Audubon’s online adoption program at https://store.audubon.org.
