Bald eagle history at Ten Mile River Scout Museum

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Ten Mile River Scout Museum is hosting a video presentation about the American bald eagle and its comeback in the Delaware River valley on Tuesday, August 17 at 7 p.m. on the museum grounds.  The presentation will be conducted by National Park Service ranger Susie Kaspar.

COVID-19 protocols will be followed.

Homesteading and crafts by the Chicken Librarian

STARLIGHT, PA — Kristin White, the Chicken Librarian and writer for the River Reporter’s Our Country Home magazine, will hold her fall classes on homesteading beginning August 21. All classes take place on her homestead in Starlight, and start at 10 a.m.

Most events include refreshments.

Natural history and kitchen tips at PEEC

DINGMANS FERRY, PA — Learn local natural history at the Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in Dingmans Ferry on Saturday, August 14 at 1 p.m. Paul Kovalski, known as Dr. Dinosaur, leads a hike on the PEEC campus. The event is free for PEEC members and costs $5 for non-members.

On Sunday, August 15, PEEC will hold a cooking class with chef Erin Taylor. Participants will learn basic kitchen skills and tricks of the trade. The class starts at 1 p.m. and there is a $10 fee.

Firehouse Book Sale returns

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — The Firehouse Book Sale will run from Thursday, August 12 through Sunday, August 15.

Sale times are Thursday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Saturday, bags can be filled for $2.

Everything is free on Sunday.

The event is sponsored by the Friends of the Western Sullivan Public Library.

History of a family farm

WAYMART, PA — The Cooperage is sponsoring a storytelling session at the Robinson farm, a fifth-generation family farm. There will be a tour with activities for younger attendees.

It is part of the Cooperage’s Romping Radishes program, and is for children in pre-K through second grade and their families.

Heavy MeNtal music at the Rock Valley Schoolhouse

ROCK VALLEY, NY — Neuroscientist Joseph LeDoux and singer/songwriter/storyteller Colin Dempsey perform as So We Are, also known as the Acoustic Amygdaloids, at the Rock Valley Schoolhouse on Sunday, August 15 at 4 p.m. Music will be from their Heavy MeNtal catalogue, and LeDoux will provide interspersed commentary about the brain and mind.

The performance will be held outdoors. Seating is available, or bring your own blankets or chairs.

‘Young Frankenstein’ at the Rivoli Theater

SOUTH FALLSBURG — The Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop will present “Young Frankenstein” at the Rivoli Theater in South Fallsburg in August.

Evening shows are on Friday and Saturday, August 13 and 14, 20 and 21 at 8 p.m. Afternoon shows are on Sunday, August 15 and 22 at 2 p.m.

The shows are sponsored by the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance. Tickets cost $18 for adults and $15 for seniors age 60 and up, students with valid ID, members of the military and veterans.

‘Picking up the Pieces’ at the Narrowsburg Union

NARROWSBURG, NY — “Picking up the Pieces,” the new exhibit at the Narrowsburg Union, will hold an opening on Saturday, August 14 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

It showcases the art of collage and features the work of many artists.

“Picking up the Pieces” will run from August 14 to October 2 in the Galleries at the Narrowsburg Union.

Biodiversity Jam in Honesdale

HONESDALE, PA — The Pike Wayne Conservation Partnership is hosting a night of drinks, food and discussion about the plants and animals that live in our world.

The program will be held on Thursday, August 19, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the side room at the Here & Now Brewing Company in Honesdale.

Partnership members will give short talks about biodiversity in our region.

The Biodiversity Jam is the first in a series of Science on Tap programs that will run through the autumn of 2021.

The Pike Wayne Conservation Partnership is composed of local conservation organizations: the Delaware Highlands Conservancy, the state department of conservation and natural resources, the Keystone Clean Water Team, the Lacawac Sanctuary, and more.

Live music and dance at the E.B. Crawford Public Library

MONTICELLO, NY — The E.B. Crawford Public Library will host entertainer Chuck James with accompanist Leon Hilfstein on Monday, August 16, starting at 6 p.m. Rain date is Tuesday, August 24.

Flamenco dancer and choreographer Juana Cala will perform on Wednesday, August 18 at 6 p.m. The show will also feature flamenco singer Mario Rincon and flamenco guitarist Greg Melnick. Rain date is Wednesday, August 25.

The duo Fisher and Kean will appear on Thursday, August 19 at 6 p.m. Deborah Anne Fisher and Paul Kean will perform songs from their new album, “Pure Local Honey.” Rain date is Thursday, August 26.

Registration is limited to 50 people for all performances, and masks and social distancing are required. Bring your own chair or blanket.

Joel Hill Sawmill to open for tours

LOOKOUT, PA — The 150-year-old Joel Hill Sawmill will open for tours on Saturday, August 13 and Sunday, August 14. Start times on both days are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Attendance is limited to 18 people per tour.

Tours are free but donations are encouraged.

The Cleveland Museum next door will also be open, showing early-20th-century industrial equipment.

‘An Evening of Chamber Music’ in Shandelee

SHANDELEE, NY — The Sunset Concert Series continues with three new performances.

On Thursday, August 12, the Ulysses String Quartet will appear at 8 p.m. The show will include the music of Haydn, Schubert and Tailleferre.

On Saturday, August 14, the Neave Trio performs the music of Rachmaninov, Ravel and Brahms.

And on Tuesday, August 17, Steven Lin will perform works by Scarlatti, Chopin, Beethoven, Debussy and Liszt.

All concerts are held at the Shandelee Music Festival’s fully accessible, climate-controlled Sunset Concert Pavilion in Livingston Manor.

Shows begin at 8 p.m. and are followed by a specialty dessert reception. Tickets are priced at $35 for adults, $30 for SMF members, and $10 for students 17 and under. Concerts can be attended virtually for $20. Advanced reservations are required; call 845/439-3277.

‘Summer Vibes’ weekend at Harmony in the Woods

HAWLEY, PA — J. Robert Spencer will perform on Friday, August 13 at Harmony in the Woods’ outdoor venue. Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers will follow on Saturday, August 14.

The music will range from Broadway to funk to Americana-groove and soul.

On Friday, Spencer performs radio and Broadway songs in his show “7,000 Miles to Broadway.” The show begins at 6 p.m. and doors open at 5 p.m.

On Saturday, Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers, a “6-piece soul, americana-groove, funk, and pop band,” according to Jill Carletti from Harmony in the Woods, will take their turn. The show begins at 6 p.m. and doors open at 5 p.m.

Tickets for the performances cost $25 and $35, depending on seats chosen; guests are encouraged to bring their own refreshments and drinks from local area restaurants. Chairs are included for stage-side seats, and priced at $35; hillside seats cost $25 and chairs may be rented for $5 or patrons can bring their own seating.and patrons of Hillside Seats priced at $25 can rent a chair for $5 or bring their own seating.

Parking is available on site. In case of rain, these two performances will take place at the Hawley United Methodist Church.
