JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — There are good days, and, on the flip side of the coin, there are lousy days.

To the victors go the spoils: Tri-Valley’s ace pitcher Jacob Yager

Monday, May 20 wasn’t the best of afternoons, as the visiting Bears of Tri-Valley (13-2, 5-1 OCIAA) blanked the home team Sullivan West Bulldogs (6-11, 0-6 OCIAA) in a non-league baseball game at Lion’s Field, that old reliable field of dreams, when a state-of-the-art field is more like a swamp.

The highlight of the game was in the bottom of the second frame, as the Bears pulled off a rare 1-1-6 triple play, sending the hopeful Dogs back to their seats in a spectacular play that had both sides of the isle applauding the effort.

For the record book, according to the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) stats of August 16, 2018, there have only been 717 triple plays since 1876 in Major League Baseball.

Going for it. Sullivan West’s Eric McBride swings for the moon.

So to witness that in high school game of swats is something to cheer about and recall for a long time.

Tri-Valley’s ace pitcher, tall-timber Jacob Yager did his thing on the mound, dominating the opposition, hurling a two-hitter and striking out 10.

Sullivan West’s starting pitcher Chad Mercado was in play for four innings, giving up seven hits and five runs before being relieved by Ryan Sayers and Kyle Reimer.

The Bears’ Joseph Schulte slashed a triple, while teammate Alex Schultz posted four runs.

Before the start of the game, Sullivan West’s senior swatters were honored: James DeAveiro, Luke Ellison, Eric McBride, Alec Milucky and Kyle Reimer.
