BROWNDALE, PA — At around 1:40 a.m. on December 4, a woman placed a call to 911 and said that a man, Jesse Lester Skates, 29, Waymart, had broken into her home on Martin Street and shot her "male companion" with a rifle.
According to Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), Skates entered the residence by breaking a window. The noise woke up the woman, who found Skates climbing through the window and holding a .22-caliber rifle. The woman went back to her bedroom to wake up the male companion. Skates followed her into the bedroom, and after a brief verbal exchange shot the man in the face. During an ensuing struggle, the rifle was broken and Skates cut the already injured man's face with a pocket knife.
Skates fled the scene in a dark Subaru. Troopers found the vehicle on Elk Lake Drive and took Skates into custody after a brief pursuit. He is being charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, burglary and other charges.
The male victim was transported to Geisinger CMC where he remains in intensive care but is expected to survive.
