JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — In their first game of the year on Monday, May 11, the softball swatters of Sullivan West didn’t have the greatest season opener: The Lady Bulldogs (0-1) were defeated 28-0 by the Lady Spartans of Seward (1-1).

In the first frame, the visitors posted two runs, four in the second, six in the third and three in the fourth. In the fifth frame, the Lady Spartans sent 13 runners across the plate in a real walk-a-thon after Isabella Dubois took over the mound from the home team’s starting hurler, Riley Ernst.

Before the game was called after five innings of regulation play by the “mercy rule,” as the Lady Spartans were ahead by at least 10 runs, Sullivan West had a brief bright spot: In the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Elizabeth Reeves slashed a double, advanced to the hot plate on a single by Nicole Reeves, only to see that glimmer of hope fade as the next batter struck out.
