Historic railroad excursion for Mother’s Day

SCRANTON, PA — The Steamtown National Historic Site (NHS) presents a scenic ride to the Pocono foothills. On Sunday, May 12, the trip departs from NHS at 1:30 and returns at 3:30 p.m.

Tickets cost $24 for adults ages 16 to 61, $22 for seniors (62+) and $17 for children ages six to 15. Children ages five and under ride for free.

Acoustic bluegrass jam

HONESDALE, PA — On Wednesday, May 15 at 7 p.m., The Cooperage is hosting its monthly acoustic bluegrass jam. Ron Penska will lead the jam. All instruments and all levels of players are welcome to join. This gathering is a great opportunity for new players to learn how to interact musically with others.

Music to resound again at Bethany’s bandshell

BETHANY, PA — On Sunday, May 19, Bethany Borough will celebrate the grand reopening of its 1930s bandshell, which stands at the south end of the borough’s Central Park. The historic structure, which was built nearly 80 years ago to host outdoor entertainment events, had fallen into disrepair.

With rennovations complete, a brief dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. will lead off the afternoon’s festivities, which include musical entertainment from The Farmers’ Daughters plus a song or two by Bethany’s favorite eight-year-old soprano, Esme Schloesser. Cake and refreshments will be served until 4 p.m. Concerts and other events in the bandshell are planned for the future.


Mediumship reading and more at the Mystic Fair

CALLICOON, NY — On Saturday, May 11 from 12 noon to 5 p.m., the Western Supper Club and Inn is hosting a Mystic Fair. Attendees can participate in Reiki and tarot, oracle and mediumship readings. There will be jewelry, oils and crystal vendors as well as a special Mother’s Day lunch menu.

‘Sounds Like Teen Spirit’ teen open mic

HONESDALE, PA — On Friday, May 10 from 7 to 9 p.m., The Cooperage is hosting an open mic night to showcase the talent of the community’s youth. School-aged students are encouraged to participate in Sounds Like Teen Spirit and share their performing art, whether it’s guitar, rap, stand-up comedy, poetry, song, juggling, or playing keyboards.

Everyone is invited to see the performances, but only the area’s youth will be invited to step up on stage. Donations will be collected at the door.  


New exhibits at Art-a-Pelago Galleries

HONESDALE, PA — In addition to “Off the Wall,” the supplemental exhibit to the Great Wall of Honesdale, the opening reception for Kevin Dwight Richardson’s exhibit will be held on Saturday, May 11 at D.J. Harvey Agency from 6 to 9 p.m.

Art-a-Pelago is one gallery in two locations. Paros, at D.J. Harvey Agency, 815 Main St., is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Anafi, at Bodhi Tree, 214 Sixth St., is open Monday through Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Both galleries are open on Second Saturdays from 6 to 9 p.m.


Downtown Barn opens for 2019 season

LIBERTY, NY — On Saturday, May 11, the Downtown Bar’s doors will open at 7 p.m. for the 2019 season. Slam Allen takes the stage at 8 p.m. after an opening performance from Chris Raabe. Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop kicks off 70th season

SOUTH FALLSBURG, NY — The 2019 One Act Play Festival is coming to the Rivoli Theatre. Six short plays, including three original works, will comprise the festival over the weekends of May 10 to 12 and 17 to 19.

“Backed Up,” is a humorous look at constipation and various interventions to solve the problem. “Betchais” is a drama that centers on the family dynamics of a young man doing community service at a soup kitchen and his estranged father. “Bad Auditions for Bad Actors” tells the comedic story of a casting director who has one day to find the leads for a production of “Romeo and Juliet.” “Linger Awhile” takes an irreverent look at the way we treat “oldsters.” “Mrs. Claus Gets Menopause” is a comedy about Santa preparing for Christmas while dealing with Mrs. Claus going through the change of life. “The Most Important Thing in the World” tells the story of teenage siblings, alone in the world, taking on adult responsibilities.

Performances are Friday and Saturday, May 10, 11, 17, 18 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 12 and 19 at 2 p.m. Admission costs $15 for adults, $12 for students, seniors (60+), military and veterans with a valid ID. Tickets will be available at the door one hour prior to curtain or can be purchased in advance online at www.showtix4u.com.

Two new exhibits at the DVAA

 NARROWSBURG, NY — “Chronicles of Forgotten Wars,” an exhibition of paintings by Dasha Ziborova, and “TAT Art: Traditional Tattoo Designs Aggrandized as 3D Sculpture,” an installation of painted foam-core by Brandi Merolla, open at Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) on Saturday, May 11, with a reception from 3 to 5 p.m.

The shows will be on view through June 15. Ziborova will lead a discussion about the work in this exhibit on Tuesday, May 21 at 5:30 p.m. Local tattoo artist Dan Santoro will join Merolla for a talk on Saturday, June 8, starting at 12 p.m. The talks are free and open to the public.
