An official from the Pennsylvania State Police released a statement at about 6:40 p.m., which said that after a seven week search, Eric Matthew Frein, the accused killer who is believed to have killed one officer and critically wounded another, has been apprehended.

Tcf. Connie Devens wrote in an email to the media:

"I can confirm that we have taken Eric Frein into custody. Further information will be released at a later time. NO further information will be released or confirmed at this time."

48 days before the capture, Frein was accused of ambushing and killing Corporal Byron Dickson and critically wounding Trooper Alex Douglass in an act police called cowardly at the state police barracks in Blloming Grove.

Immediately after the shooting, Frein drove his Jeep into a swamp, and left in such a hurry that he was not able to even take his drivers license with him.

Still he managed to avoid the intensive manhunt during which thousands of officers pursued him. He was sited several times in the area, and police say he had been planning the shooting for years. Searchers found clothing and explosive devices and other objects belonging to Frein.

His actions led him to be placed on the FBI's Most Wanted List.

He was captured in an abandoned airplane hanger in Pocono Township, in Monroe County in the general area where police had been searching for him. He was taken to the Blooming Grove barracks for processing, the site of the shooting.
