LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — Every cloud has a silver lining, or so they say.

For Sullivan West’s volleyball team (0-2), the forecast has been rather overcast so far, but on Monday, September 9, they posted their first winning set of the season, although in the end they lost the match 3-1 against the Lady Raiders of James I. O’Neill (2-1).

In their first outing of the season on Friday, September 5, the Lady Bulldogs were defeated 3-0 in straight sets by Burke Catholic.

But less than a week later, they were energized by handily winning the third set (25-16) in the match against O’Neill, which took the other periods 26-24, 25-10 and 25-16.

Kate Wilson, coach of the Lady Raiders said her goal for the new season is to win the division, and “make it past the first round of sectionals.”

O’Neill’s squad of volleyball players this year has a total of five seniors, a trio of whom are regular starters: Emily Boylan, Julie Hajjar and Hailey Hill.

John Mayer, returning helmsman of Sullivan West’s varsity volleyball team, said his goal for the team is “to keep flying around like we did today… covering each other, and playing fundamentally sound…”

“We’re hoping for a sectional bid. We have some talent, but we have to play together as a team… I’m a firm believer that the harder you practice, that carries over into games,” he added.

The Lady Bulldogs are captained by four seniors: Keri Burr, Carrie Sykes, Alexa Minckler and Carly Simpson.

Burr, a 17-yrear senior co-captain, has been playing volleyball since modifieds.

Her take of the Lady Bulldogs’ goals this year?

“As a team, we’re hoping to make it to sectionals.”
