A natural new year

With 2016 coming to a close, it’s time to think about the broad horizon of possibilities for 2017. One worthy goal to consider is committing to a deeper relationship with the abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation in the Upper Delaware River region. What a blessing it is to live in a place filled with the riches of natural resources found here.

As the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources reminds us on its website, the connection between better all-around health and outdoor recreation is well established.

Just a few of the physical benefits of regular outdoor activity include reductions in blood pressure and arthritic pain, weight loss, improved muscle tone and immunity, as well as a lowered risk of diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. Psychological and emotional benefits may include improvements in mood and one’s ability to focus, better sleep, less stress and more energy. What’s not to like about all this?

Aim for better health in the coming year and kick off 2017 with a First Day hike. Join one of the excursions scheduled for January 1 at tinyurl.com/jaxece2, or plan your own with family and friends.

For a multitude of outdoor opportunities to explore in New York, check out the link to the New York Department of Environmental Conservation’s website at www.dec.ny.gov/62.html.

Keep your resolution in full swing with a series of Delaware Highlands Conservancy events focused on eagles. Check out Eagle Day at the Wallenpaupack Environmental Learning Center on January 7, or hop aboard one of the conservancy’s winter Eagle Watch Bus Tours to learn about these majestic birds and their habitat.
