A tale of two halves

ROSCOE, NY — Talk about a come-from-behind victory and more than a century of coaching experience.

On Saturday, September 15, the home team Blue Devils of Roscoe/Livingston Manor/Downsville faced off against the visiting Sullivan West Bulldogs in Section IX eight-man football.

For some local high school football teams, that’s the new math in town as they switch this season on the gridiron from traditional 11-man teams to eight-man football.

KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY — Memories of speed and the flow of time.

The time in the ‘50s my dad took me to a midget race, a wheel came spinning off a car at speed, sailed over the fence and crashed to earth a few feet from us.

One decade passes into another, and pretty soon you have almost 50 years coaching legions of Blue Devils teams at a rural high school tucked away in a quiet corner of Roscoe.

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — On Friday, June 15, Sullivan West High School recognized the stellar achievements of their student athletes on the various fields of play during their annual Spring Sports Awards ceremony organized by the athletic department, under the direction of athletic director David Franskevicz.

Those roadblocks life sometimes throws in your way, even as a teenage athlete gearing up to graduation after taking to the field of athletic completion.

Sign me up, coach

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — On Wednesday, June 6, two graduating Sullivan West seniors signed on the dotted line, announcing their intent to attend a couple of nearby colleges where they will continue their education and further their sports careers.

Splash-down: Sullivan West’s Bryce Maopolske got his feet wet in the boys’ 3000-meter steeplechase (Division 2). The sophmore finished fourth, with a time of 10:51.34.

MIDDLETOWN, NY — "It’s all about the kick," said Sullivan West’s veteran track and field coach, Ron Bauer, as he sized up the student athletes competing in the second day of the Section IX state qualifier at Faller Field.

Bombers blast Bears in Class C showdown

SAUGERTIES, NY — Nuts to Norman Mailer. Tough guys can shed a few tears.

On Saturday, May 26 the Bears of Tri-Valley got shut out 9-0 by the Pine Plains Bombers in the Section IX Class C baseball final at Lorez Field, part of the Cantine Veterans Memorial Complex.
