Tuxedo trounces Sullivan West 3-0

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — You gotta get it over the net. That’s the number one rule in volleyball.

On Wednesday, September 12, the visiting Lady Tornadoes of Tuxedo defeated the Sullivan West Lady Bulldogs as they blew past the home team 3-0 in an early season OCIAA Division IV varsity match.

Tuxedo swept all three sets (25-16, 25-22, 25-10), despite a thrilling second-frame battle during which Sullivan West almost came from behind to post a middle-of-the-contest win.

At one point in that exciting set, the Lady Bulldogs were up 15-8 in the wake of a tied score, only to watch their lead evaporate much like mist on a sunny morning over the nearby lake.

Spurred on by shouts from the Sullivan West fans—“Come on Bulldogs, you’ve got ‘em on the run!”—and “Come on Tuxedo, get it back!” from the visitors’ side of the bleachers, both squads gave it their best shot.

Tuxedo’s coach Micelle Hines said her team is led by a solo captain, Alexandra Maynard, the only senior returning from last year, noting the rest of the team moved up from junior varsity.

“They’re getting better every day… learning and adjusting,” said Hines.

Maynard, a 17-year-old upperclassman, said the match “started out kind of rough,” but after her team began communicating, “We came together.”

“In the second set we thought we were going to lose,” but then they switched from a negative outlook to “staying positive.”

The mismatched red and green shoelaces must have helped swing the tide.

Maynard said the team adopted this lucky trademark after thinking about stoplights: red means stop, while “Green means go… keep fighting.”

“When we’re down, we look down and see green,” she added.

Not exactly like Dorothy’s glittering ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 classic film “Wizard of Oz,” but a hometown grassroots version.
