Comets stung by Yellow Jackets

MIDDLETOWN, NY — Sometimes a great defense isn’t the best offense.

In the first half, the Fallsburg Comets (16-1-1) adopted a defensive strategy against the Section 1 Hastings Yellow Jackets of Hastings High in a state tournament showdown.

But the plan backfired, as Section 1 Hastings dominated the field of play, playing a strong offense until their previously unvanquished opponents literally ran out of gas.

“Our legs were starting to get a little heavy by that time,” lamented Fallsburg’s coach Michael Geller.

The Class B first-round match was held Wednesday afternoon, November 2 at Faller Field.

Hastings scored first at 12:01 in the opening frame as Jackson Silverstein beat the keep off an assist by Sasha Fuller to put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0.

The Comets battled back at 6:09 as Kelvin Nunez tied it up 1-1 with his 39th goal of the year, giving Fallsburg a surge of much needed energy.

But it was a case of too little, too late. Not enough fuel left in the tank.

As the game clock ticked down to 3:59 remaining, Silverstein aced the game on an assist by Willem Bosto to give the Yellow Jackets a hard fought and sometimes bloody win.

“I think we played very, very well,” said Richard Kavy, assistant coach of the Yellow Jackets.

“We controlled the midfield at our level of play… it was all a matter of control.”

His take on the soccer season?

“It’s been a great run, and a great gang of kids,” said Kavy.

Geller said this season’s Section 9 boys varsity soccer squad “brought a lot of energy” to the Fallsburg community.

“It was awesome to see; I’m just sad to see it all over. The boys should be proud of their season.”

What about the match against the Section 1 champs?

“It was kind of David trying to slay Goliath,” said Geller.

Game stats: Fallsburg (15 keeper saves by Selvin Brizuela; 6 shots on goal; 1 corner kick); Hastings (2 keeper saves by Daymon Theodule; 27 shots on goal; 9 corner kicks).
