Beginner and advanced poultry farming classes

LIBERTY, NY — You can learn how to get started with backyard poultry or expand existing knowledge on poultry farming this summer. Michelle Proscia, Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC) agriculture-subject educator, presents two separate programs on poultry for farmers or curious community members at the Extension Education Center on 64 Ferndale-Loomis Rd.

“Intro to Raising Poultry” will be held on Thursday, July 26, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. It will help people get started and teach them proper breed selection and equipment needed; hatching and raising chicks and adult birds; and feeding, nutrition, and proper bird health care.

“Advanced Poultry Farming,” on Wednesday, August 8 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will help expand existing knowledge with information on ways to increase income on your farm, develop enterprise budgets for your flock, learn about regulations for selling eggs and meat in New York State and potential markets for your products.

The cost is $15 per person, per class or $10 per class for CCESC enrollees. Anyone can enroll in CCESC for an annual contribution of $25 and receive a monthly subscription to the Extension Connection magazine.

Program fees support the cost of instructors, refreshments, materials and facilities. Additional donations for CCESC programs are appreciated.

Registration with non-refundable payment is required in advance by visiting www.sullivancce.org, emailing sullivan@cornell.edu, or calling CCESC at 845/292-6180. In the event of special needs, the public should contact the CCESC office.
