Trail time

As we enter the third month of 2017, it’s good to keep in mind how quickly time passes and how soon spring will be here. Connecting with the rising energy of spring is a great way to uphold those New Year’s resolutions for better physical and mental health. Take time in the coming weeks to explore some of the terrific trails in the Upper Delaware River region to experience the sensory re-emergence of life in its myriad expressions.

One trail well worth wandering is the short but sweet Riverside Trail, an Eagle Scout project completed in 2014 by Michael Rogers Jr. (aka “Turtle”), a member of Troop 1 based in Honesdale, PA. The trail runs along the Lackawaxen River behind the Delaware and Hudson Canal Park at Lock 31, so hikers can enjoy a dose of history before taking to the trail. You’ll find the parking area along Route 6 between Hawley and White Mills, Pennsylvania.

Another opportunity to explore a popular trail with a knowledgeable guide is scheduled for March 18 from 10 to 11:30 a.m., just north of Promised Land State Park in Wayne County. The Brodhead Watershed Association is hosting a Get Outdoors Poconos hike to the Bruce Lake Natural Area in Palmyra Township. The 2.2-mile hike will be led by Carol Hillestad and will loop through the natural area and along the 47-acre Egypt Meadow Lake. Four beaver lodges will be visible in the lake, which was dammed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s.

Registration is required for the free hike. Call 570/839-1120 or 629-2727 or email info@brodheadwatershed.org to register. Visit www.brodheadwatershed.org/GetOutdoors.html to learn more.
