On March 27, 2017, Joseph Meyer, a retired dairy farmer, butcher, and life-long resident of Cochecton Center, died peacefully in his sleep surrounded by family members at Ellen Memorial Hospice Unit in Honesdale, PA following a short illness.
Joe was born November 9, 1929 in Callicoon, NY.
Joe was a member of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Narrowsburg, NY where he served as Eucharist Minister. Joe was also a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and a Secular Franciscan.
Joe proudly served many years as a Town of Cochecton councilman and founding member of the Town of Cochecton Ambulance Corps. He also served several terms as vice-chairman of the Sullivan County Republican Committee. Joe was a past member of United Milk Producers and a member of Sullivan County Cooperative Extension for many years.
His favorite pastimes were spending time with his family and many outdoor activities, especially fishing.
Joe will be greatly missed by his family, many friends and neighbors.
Surviving are his loving wife of 65 years Maria (née Niessen) at home; his two sons and their wives, Bob and Rosemary of Narrowsburg, Ron and Anna of Glen Spey; six grandchildren: Peter, Veronica, Elizabeth, Christopher, Mary and James; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Jack Meyer; his mother Madeline Meyer; brothers: Eugene, Henry and John.
Friends may call on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home, 5068 State Route 52, Jeffersonville, NY, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 1 at 11 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Church, Bridge Street, Narrowsburg, NY. Burial in the St. Francis Xavier Cemetery will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Joseph’s name to St. Francis Xavier Parish, Narrowsburg.
