HARRISBURG, NY — The week-long Pennsylvania Farm Show kicked off January 5, and featured its first ever craft beer competition, with 152 entries from 28 brewers in the state.
The Wallenpaupack Brewing Company in Hawley picked up three awards, including the Pennsylvania Preferred Legacy Award for Wet Hop Farm House Ale, made from ingredients all grown in Pennsylvania. That ale had the highest score of any beer across all categories.
Wallenpaupack also picked up awards for its India Pale Ale dubbed Largemouth, and its First Anniversary Ale.
The Wallenpaupack Brewing Company opened slightly more than a year ago. Its owner, Becky Ryman, said the awards meant a lot to the young operation.
According to the trade organization Brewers Association, Pennsylvania is the top state in the country for brewing beer with a total of about 3.9 million barrels a year.
