MILFORD, PA — A Pike County man has been arrested in connection with the overdose death of another man on February 1, 2018. The overdose victim was 26-year-old James Read, who died at his residence in Delaware Township. The man arrested for delivering the fatal heroin dose to Read is 27-year-old Kyle James Piekenbrock.

Pike County District Attorney Raymond J. Tonkin and the Pennsylvania State Police announced the arrest on February 8, 2019. Piekenbrock was charged with drug delivery resulting in death and related charges, and faces up to 40 years in jail.

According to the affidavit of probable cause, when Read was discovered deceased at his residence, heroin packets with a stamp labeling them “Death Bed” were also found at the scene. Investigators found that Read’s cellphone contained messages between Read and Piekenbrock in which they discussed the purchase of heroin.

State Police arrested Piekenbrock on February 1, 2018 on an outstanding drug warrant. During that arrest officers discovered 33 packets of heroin labeled “Death Bed,” $541 in cash and a needle.

Pike County Coroner Christopher Brighton ruled that the cause of Read’s death was heroin toxicity.

“We will continue to investigate, charge and prosecute the individuals who are responsible for peddling death into our community through this poison,” said DA Tokin.
