WAYNE COUNTY, PA — Nearly 9,000 voters made it to polling stations across Wayne County Tuesday to vote in Pennsylvania primaries.

In the most-watched race, for Republican District Attorney candidate, A.G. Howell beat out his opponent Kathy Martin by roughly 1,800 and 61% of the vote.

Howell, former associate solicitor for Wayne County Children & Youth Services and a past solicitor for the Victims’ Intervention Program, will go up against incumbent District Attorney Pat Robinson in the general election.

The other contested races included Superior Court Judge, County Commissioner, County Auditor and regional school board directors

On the Democratic ticket: Amanda Green Hawkins won the democratic nomination for Superior Court representative with 38% of the vote. Wendell Kay brought in 74% of the commissioner's vote, and Jocelyn Cramer brought in 58%.

The Democratic Wayne Highlands School Board Director region two—which includes the townships of Bethany, Dyberry, Honesdale one through three and Lebanon—was particularly close. Brian Weist beat out his closest competitor, Lynne Goodwin, by three votes.

In region three, James Rutherford nailed down 126 votes to win.

Out of 9,345 registered democrats in the county, 2,149 cast votes in the primary Tuesday.

On the Republican ticket: Rebecca Warren of Luzerne County nailed down 48% of the vote for Republican Superior Court Judge. Catherine Rickard won the County Auditor spot with 58% of the vote. Brian Smith took the most votes for the commissioner nomination with 45% of the vote. Scott Kinzinger, who died roughly a month ago, received 28% of the vote in that race.

Gina Pritchard beat out her three competitors—all of whom also ran on the Democratic ticket—by receiving 601 votes. In region two, Rutherford also nailed down the Republican nomination for the position.

In total 6,662 out of 17,879 registered Republicans cast votes in Wayne County.

The turnout wasn't particularly abnormal, said Bureau of Elections Director Cindy Furman, but was higher than expected. "It surprised me that we had an average [turnout] of 30%—I didn't think we would go that high," she said.
