Mackenzie students Christmas shop for loved ones

GLENN SPEY, NY — Santa isn’t the only one who is busy checking lists this time of year. Students at the George Ross Mackenzie Elementary School in Glen Spey were also making sure that their family and loved ones would have gifts under the Christmas tree. As the annual two-day holiday bazaar wound down, last-minute shoppers Jillian Smith, Klaudia Wysocki and R.J. Marchesim, all from the 5th grade, used their lunch period to select just the right gifts. The smiles on their faces gave witness to the fact that they had found just what they’d hoped for.

The opportunity for the elementary students to shop is provided by members of the Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA) and the students’ families. Sonia Mullen, PTA vice president, said that members of the school community, parents and grandparents lent a hand to help the students find gifts.

Mullen said that volunteers shop for the merchandise throughout the year, taking advantage of sales and other buying opportunities so that most gifts can be purchased for $5 or less. Mostly jewelry and craft items, the student can also get a colorful gift bag and fill out a gift tag so that the shopping experience is complete.
