Wally Ice Fest moved back

HAWLEY, PA — The Chamber of the Northern Poconos has announced that Wally Ice Fest, which had been scheduled for January 28 and 29, has been postponed until February 25 and 26, and will take place if it is determined that there are safe ice conditions on Lake Wallenpaupack.

Organizers need a minimum of nine inches of ice on the lake for the event to go forward. A post on the chamber’s website says, “Ice thickness is never uniform on any body of water, making it hard to judge the safety of the area. The near-shore ice is often much thicker and safer than ice further out. The main body of the lake typically does take longer to freeze and is expected to be thinner than what is now reported in the Coves (six inches).”

Testing was performed on January 15 at two event locations, and it was determined the ice is not thick enough at this time to proceed.
