Sullivan West students contribute to ‘Nature’s Newsletter’

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — The Delaware Valley Eagle Alliance (DVEA) is preparing to launch another edition of its quarterly online publication, “Nature’s Newsletter, ”with high schoolers as part of the editorial staff.

“As part of our outreach to the community and to expand the use of Nature’s Newsletter as an educational tool, we began to include articles on topics of interest to students, and articles written by students for students,” said Yoke Bauer DiGiorgio, director of the alliance.

The DVEA partnered with Sullivan West High School to find student contributions for the newsletters, as well as potentially connect wildlife and environmental organizations with student-related projects.

Two seniors who have taken classes with teacher Billy Templeton, Chanlyn O’Sullivan and Emily Gaebal, have submitted articles to the newsletter about nature and the importance of wilderness.

O’Sullivan’s article, “The Importance of Hankins Creek,” conveys the necessity of wild places in nature and the need to protect them for future generations to enjoy. It was featured in the spring issue of the newsletter. O’Sullivan said in a release that the experience was positive. “I appreciate having this amazing opportunity to see my work in print and share my message,” she said.

Gaebel’s article, “Forest of Self Reflection,” talks about a place or landscape with which someone can form a spiritual connection. It will appear in the edition slated for the end of June.

“Working with the DVEA has increased the opportunities… for our students to look at our natural setting in a way which they may never have, and express themselves as young members of our community and, eventually, the inheritors of this beautiful area,” said Sullivan West Principal Mark Plescia. He added that the opportunity has also filled a need for more community-service hours needed by seniors at Sullivan West. “The DVEA has given our students another option, as we, as a school, work to create civic minded students.”
