Sullivan Republican Convention by candlelight

KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY — The 2018 Sullivan County Republican party annual convention is one that will long be remembered. The event was scheduled for Wednesday, May 16 at Sorella’s Restaurant in Kauneonga Lake. However there was a small problem: there was no electrical power in Kauneonga Lake, due to the severe storm that had stricken the region the previous day. The timing of the situation was tight due to the upcoming New York State Republican Party convention, which was scheduled to begin on May 23. It would be very difficult to reschedule with the bevy of party officials that were planning to be in attendance.

Jerry Sarosy, the owner of Sorella’s, had gas for cooking and was willing to give it a go. So the decision was made Wednesday morning to proceed with the meeting, regardless of the fact that the power wasn’t on. Candles were brought in for the lighting, water for the facilities, windows opened for the temperature. Republican committee people from across Sullivan County’s 15 townships arrived, including Sullivan County elected officials Mike Schiff, Sheriff Jim Farrell, District Attorney Nancy Buck, Treasurer LuisAlvarez and legislature chairperson and legislator Joe Perrello. Several campaign staff from 19th District Congressman John Faso’s campaign were in attendance as well. And then, just as Sullivan County Republican Chairman Richard Coombe started the meeting by candlelight, the power was restored. Everyone applauded, and the convention continued.

The primary business of the meeting was the selection of the New York State Senate Republican candidate. First Chairman Coombe thanked current New York State 42nd District Sen. John Bonacic for his 20 years of service to Sullivan County. Sen. Bonacic then took the floor and, for the first time as a Senator, he nominated someone for office: Annie Rabbitt. Rabbitt is currently the Orange County clerk, and she also served eight years as a New York State assemblywoman. Rabbitt was unanimously selected as the New York State Senate candidate, receiving thunderous applause and support. Rabbitt gave a rousing speech to the party faithful, pledging her dedication and service to all of the constituents in the 42nd District. Supporters believe Rabbitt has the experience and temperament for the position. Assemblyman Brian Miller, 101st Assembly District, was unanimously endorsed for re-election.

A number of speeches were given, and representatives from Congressman John Faso’s campaign spoke about the importance of this November’s election and how the first order of business of the opposition party would be the impeachment of President Trump.
