MILFORD, PA — The League of Women Voters of Pike County is sponsoring a presentation on gerrymandering and redistricting, and their effects on governance, accountability and the economy. The presentation will be led by Fritz Walker of Fair Districts PA (FDPA) on Wednesday, April 19, at 7 p.m. at the Pike County Public Library Meeting Room at 119 East Harford St. The public is invited.
Fair Districts PA is a non-partisan grassroots coalition of citizens and organizations that was created to work for change regarding the unfair practice of manipulating voting maps in order to protect incumbents. Among their guiding principles are the promotion of competitive elections and working to make changes to the Pennsylvania process of drawing districts that result in impartial, transparent and accountable redistricting.
Walker and other representatives of the group have been attracting overflow audiences for their presentations throughout the state. According to Walker, who is the state coordinating team chair for FDPA, “Right now, partisan politicians re-draw political districts in Pennsylvania. This is a clear conflict of interest, the proverbial fox guarding the chicken coop. It’s politicians picking their voters, rather than voters picking their political leaders.”
